Project brief
Project brief
The purpose of this class project is to explore what the future of smart wearables might bring. Each student was given two weeks to develop an app idea for the smartwatch, consider its functions (2 to 3 max), and design a prototype. As this project looks into the future, I wanted to think outside the box and incorporate futuristic but feasible technology in my app. At the end of week two, I will also showcase my final idea and app prototype through a class presentation.

Research on future technologies and hardware
Research on future technologies and hardware
Before coming up with an idea, I researched to understand better what kind of technology and hardware could become possible. I found many exciting developments within the technology sector through reading online articles and scientific blogs. With hindsight, below are the three conceivable futuristic developments I have incorporated as part of my final app idea.

Monitoring of health, e.g. blood pressure is possible on smartwatch devices.
Built-in cameras becoming standard hardware on most smartwatches.

Keeping in mind all the future technologies I have researched, I initially developed a smartwatch app that can scan the users’ meals (with a built-in camera). The app automatically recognises the food and evaluates its calories (by using deep learning/intelligent AI). The app also automatically adds the calorie count to a daily calorie tracker.
After prototyping the screens for this initial idea, I received feedback that I could push my app to be more creative by redirecting the main focus to warn people of allergies instead of tracking calories. The idea of a futuristic app being able to warn people from live threatening allergies is a more unique and niche concept.

Idea prototyping - Primary function
Idea prototyping - Primary function
Having redeveloped my initial calorie tracking idea to focus on allergy warning instead, the mechanics behind the primary function of the app stays the same — the smartwatch app scans food (with a built-in camera), and then with the help of smart AI recognises the food; but now instead calculating and tracking calories, it is going to look out and warn users of food allergies.

Secondary function 1 – Additional dietary detection
I saw that on a bigger scale, many people have dietary requirements, which allergies are just a part of. Besides allergies, the app could also look out for intolerances and specific avoided ingredients to broaden the use of the app. This also means that someone with a peanut allergy who wants to eat less sugar can simultaneously check for peanuts and sugar in their food.

Secondary function 2 – Shock detection and calling SOS

Secondary function 2 – Shock detection and calling SOS
When looking into the symptoms of anaphylactic shock (caused by ingesting allergic foods), I noticed that signs such as a sudden drop in blood pressure and an increase in heart rate could be theoretically monitored by the Smartwatch when future technology advances. Thus, I incorporated this future technology into my app. With the help of the smartwatch monitoring blood pressure and heart rate, the app can look for possible signs of an anaphylactic shock. The app then warns the user and allows them to call SOS if needed.

As allergy shocks are life-threatening, I wanted my app to detect possible signs of shock and help the users to find help quickly. To do this, I incorporated a future technology into my app where the smartwatch can monitor blood pressure and heart rate. When the user goes into shock (sudden drop in blood pressure and fast heart rate), the smartwatch can detect this, and my app notifies the user, allowing them to call SOS if needed.
After SOS is called, the app will automatically send SOS responders/hospital the user's health information, location, and a warning notification highlighting the possible case of shock. Even if the user can't speak due to breathing difficulties, the app ensures that the responders have all the details and knows where to find the user.
